The Hair
Technique of Line (Plate 29).
The collection of examples gives the technique of line as applied to hair. Fig. 1 shows a collection of strands, and depicts the difference between straight and curling hair. Ringlets and waves must have light and dark lines to express their character, as they depend on light and shade effects.
The coiled strands will follow the mode of dressing the hair (Fig. 5). Allow one coil to stray loosely into another, with stray hairs falling about in an orderly manner.
Blocking arrangement for Fig. 3 is shown at Fig. 4.
The growing character of the hair should be maintained, the appearance of a wig being avoided. In all dressings of the hair it should be possible to trace the coils to their source, even in extreme cases (Fig. 7).
To dress the hair proceed in the following manner. Arrange style of dressing to harmonize with figure represented, with due attention to the prevailing mode of the moment.
Block in masses according to style of dressing desired, as Fig. 4.
Sketch hair lines in direction of masses of blocking fines in radiating or parallel lines, according to desired effect of straight or waved hair (see Figs. 2 and 6). Break these with crossings of stray hairs, lose and find outlines, keeping strongly defined on shadow side (see Fig. 2). Soften into forehead and sides. Thicken lines in shadow parts to give a silky appearance to hair.
Fancy combs, bands, and any dressy effects can be introduced into the arrangement.
